Dr Alastair Martin, Chief Strategy Officer and Founder
Alastair is a professional energy engineer with experience ranging from gigawatt-scale coal and nuclear power stations, through industrial energy efficiency, to very small embedded wind, solar and hydro generators. He founded Flexitricity to enable small generators and energy users to improve their own financial position while reducing the environmental impact of the power generation industry.
Ron Ramage, Chief Executive Officer
Ron is an experienced business director who is both commercial in outlook and pragmatic in style. Joining Flexitricity in May 2009, Ron brings with him 10 years of senior level experience in business leadership and operational delivery in technology based high growth environments. Prior to joining Flexitricity Ron was the Managing Director of FST Technologies Ltd.
Rob Mackean CA, Director of Finance
Rob has been working with technology start-ups and high growth companies for 10 years. During this time he was CFO of Voxar Ltd and Essient Photonics Ltd as well as running his own consultancy business. He has advised a number of successful companies during their early stages, including Reactec and Aircraft Medical. Rob qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1990.
Steve Uphill, Financial Controller
Steve is a qualified accountant who has run his own business consultancy company for the past 4 years. He has a background in financial management and improvement across manufacturing, technology and public sector organisations. Steve joined the company in December 2011.
Gary Swandells, Commercial Development Manager
Gary has managed commercial and sales activity for several sector leaders, including BT, NTL, Fujitsu and Indigo Vision. He has worked primarily with new innovations and rapidly growing technology areas.
Jill Cox, Sales Operations Manager
Jill joined Flexitricity in March 2011 as Sales Operations Manager, bringing eight years’ experience working within consultative-led sales processes. Jill has previously worked for financial organisations as business analyst and technical developer, as well as with a supply-side organisation in a client relationship role. Jill has a BSc in Statistics from Glasgow University.
Rachel McCarthy, Office, Marketing and Communications Manager
Rachel joined Flexitricity in August 2008 as the Office, Marketing and Communications Manager. Previously, Rachel worked within various private, public and charitable organisations, including Random House, Telewest, Royal College of General Practitioners (Scotland) and VisitScotland.
Rachel is involved right across Flexitricity's business. She has a keen interest in sustainable energy.
Bill Butcher, Analyst
Bill joined Flexitricity in January 2012 as Analyst. Bill has over 10 years business experience working mainly within large financial institutions, such as Skandia and JP Morgan.
Bill will be involved across a large section of Felxitricity's core business and has a Masters in Mathermatics.
Dr Jim O'Donnell, Energy Systems Engineer
Jim joined Flexitricity in May 2008, after completing his PhD at the Institute for Energy Systems of the University of Edinburgh. He produced an innovative technique for modelling voltage controlling transformers in distribution networks, and methods to minimise their operation whilst maintaining voltages within limits.
Jim also holds a BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh.
John Carlin, Energy Systems Engineer
John has several years of experience working as a professional engineer in the aerospace industry. He recently completed a Masters degree in environmental science, which enabled him to move to the growing field of new and renewable energy. He joined Flexitricity in September 2008 as Energy Systems Engineer.
John Porro, Energy Systems Engineer
John initially joined Flexitricity as an Associate under the Knowledge Transfer Partnership and during this two year programme worked closely with Edinburgh University. He holds a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, and previously worked in power plant design for Siemens Power Generation. John has now fully transitioned from the Knowledge Transfer Partnership into fulltime employment with Flexitricity.
Laurence Molloy, Senior IT Systems Engineer
Laurence holds an MA in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in Speech and Language Processing from the University of Edinburgh. Since obtaining his MSc Laurence has built up a broad range of IT skills working for a diverse range of technology start-up companies in the fields of speech and language technology and telecoms, including Rhetorical Systems, Daxtra Technologies and Ciqual Customer Insight. Laurence joined Flexitricity in October 2009 as a Senior IT Systems Engineer.
Kio Smallwood, IT Systems Engineer
Kio is a self-taught system administrator and programmer from the Falkland Islands with 16 years of experience in GNU/Linux. He has worked for many technology companies in Scotland including Sun Microsystems and Daxtra Technologies. His interests include esoteric programming languages, alternative energy systems and permaculture. Kio joined Flexitricity in August 2011 as our IT Systems Engineer.
